Abstract: University students’ mental health is a public health concern that may be associated with family relationships, including excessive parental involvement and the quality of emotional attachment to fathers. This study aimed to examine the relationship between helicopter parenting and father attachment with mental health problems among students at Universitas Alifah Padang. This quantitative observational study used a cross-sectional design involving 96 students selected through proportional stratified random sampling. Mental health problems were assessed using the Self-Reporting Questionnaire-20 (SRQ-20), helicopter parenting was measured using a 30-item questionnaire, and father attachment was assessed using the Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment (IPPA). Data were analyzed using univariate analysis and the Chi-square test at a significance level of 0.05. The results showed that 28.1% of students had mental health problems, 47.9% experienced helicopter parenting, and 56.2% had poor father attachment. Helicopter parenting was significantly associated with mental health problems (p=0.011), as was father attachment (p=0.015). These findings indicate that both the form of parental involvement and the quality of father-child attachment are relevant family-related factors in understanding university students’ mental health.
